What You Should Know About Windshield/Auto Glass Replacement and Repair
When you take your car to auto technician to get it repaired, you expect the person doing the work to be skilled – to be an expert. This isn’t necessarily true, and in the case of glass repair and windshield replacement, the results can be unsafe or downright dangerous.
Throughout Minneapolis, several windshields are replaced or repaired each week. However, some windshield replacement and repair is done incorrectly, due to inaccurate or insufficient training, or because the technician is in a hurry and cutting corners. Here are a few things to look for when having your auto glass replaced or repaired.
Weather Factors: According to the National Associates for Safe Auto Glass Replacement, if the temperature is less than 40 degrees, any windshield repair or replacement should be done inside. The reasoning behind this is because the adhesive used during the replacement takes longer to dry in cold weather – and your windshield isn’t secure until the adhesive dries.
Type of Adhesive Used: Make sure – by insisting, if you have to – that the glass repair is done with a strong adhesive. Keep in mind that cost may be a factor and the repair shop may choose a weaker adhesive to bond the glass. This is a serious safety issue; if the adhesive isn’t strong enough or applied correctly and you get into a wreck, your airbag deploying could actually push out your windshield. If the windshield isn’t installed correctly, it could also cause early – or late – airbag deployment.
Adhesive Drying Time: A good auto glass repair and replacement shop will give you a warning about how long you should wait before driving your car. However, this warning is not always correct. While they may tell you that it takes an hour for the adhesive to dry, a lot of adhesives actually take two hours. It’s recommended that you ask the manufacturer of the adhesive what the drying time is, and how long you need to wait before driving your car.
Insurance Recommendations: If your insurance is paying the bill, realize that some insurance companies will recommend cheaper places – not necessarily the best or safest auto glass repair/replacement shops. A little bit of research on the recommended company can save you a lot of headaches.
Installer Experience: Windshield installers don’t have to be licensed or certified to do the work – which leaves the possibility open for those that don’t really know what they’re doing. When choosing a shop, ask if their technicians are certified and how much experience they have. Certified technicians have to be able to prove that they know what they’re doing.
In every area of business – not just auto glass replacement and repair, there are those that do the work correctly and those that don’t. With a little bit of information, however, you have a better chance at choosing the correct business to use – one with integrity, skill and care for their customers.
Good luck, and safe driving!
